What comic swag to buy in January 2008.

Today's Daily Rant can also be heard by using the audio player at the end of this post, downloading the audio file to your computer or subscribing through iTunes.

For this rant I go through my recent order to Mailordercomics.com and tell you the swag I'm buying.  Consider this a service for you.  Consider me a futurist depicting what comics you're gonna want to read.  Consider me a big geek.

The Wolverine Classic 'Tiger Stripe' Museum Version, Bowen statue.

Look at this:

Bowen does his stuff right.  Classic.

Up next, from DC comics, make sure to be checking out Teen Titans: Year One #1 (click on any image for it's larger cousin):

Now that is some cool art.  It's also cool to note that the writers were looking to hit a younger niche.  About damn time.

The Spirit #14 sees a new creative team coming on board the title.  I've been enjoying what Darwyn Cooke had been doing on this title.  But I think I'm equally excited to see Sergio Aragones and Mark Evanier taking over the writers position.  Groo!  I love that book so this merger is going to be interesting to see.  The art chores are being taken care of by Mike Ploog, who has been around for a long time.

In fact, as a side note, I just read this from wikipedia:

Roy Thomas on the genesis of Ghost Rider:

“I had made up a character as a villain in Daredevil — a very lackluster character — called Stunt-Master ... a motorcyclist. Anyway, when Gary Friedrich started writing Daredevil, he said, 'Instead of Stunt-Master, I'd like to make the villain a really weird motorcycle-riding character called Ghost Rider'. He didn't describe him. I said, 'Yeah, Gary, there's only one thing wrong with it', and he kind of looked at me weird, because we were old friends from Missouri, and I said, 'That's too good an idea to be just a villain in Daredevil. He should start out right away in his own book'. When Gary wasn't there the day we were going to design it, Mike Ploog, who was going to be the artist, and I designed the character. I had this idea for the skull-head, something like Elvis' 1968 Special jumpsuit, and so forth, and Ploog put the fire on the head, just because he thought it looked nice. Gary liked it, so they went off and did it.”

Friedrich on the above, in 2001:

“Well, there's some disagreement between Roy, Mike and I over that. I threatened on more than one occasion that if Marvel gets in a position where they are gonna make a movie or make a lot of money off of it, I'm gonna sue them, and I probably will. ... It was my idea. It was always my idea from the first time we talked about it, it turned out to be a guy with a flaming skull and rode a motorcycle. Ploog seems to think the flaming skull was his idea. But, to tell you the truth, it was my idea."

So what we know now is that Mike Ploog may or may not have been the creator of Ghost Rider's flaming head.  And we kinda now know that Gary Friedrich sounds like an ass in that quote.  And we know for sure that Mike Ploog is the current artist on The Spirit and I think Mike even created The Spirit.

(just kidding, just kidding...)

From Marvel I'm looking forward to the new Amazing Spider-Man books.  Can you say fun?  I can only hope.  I'm also looking forward to the new six issue mini titled "Spider-Man: With Great Power...".  Written by David Lapham and drawn by Ex Machina artist Tony Harris.  Why am I excited about this series?  Cause Tony Harris draws pages like this:

Fantastic.  See...this stuff get's me pumped about these little pulp magazines each month.  Look at the art in that shot!  Nice...

What else from Marvel?  Well Cap gets a gun in #34, Hulk gets all red in Hulk #1, Stephan Caselli continues to kick ass on The Initiative book, Mighty Avengers #8 gets Mark Bags (yep, I can call him Bags), and Brubaker takes on the little Avengers in the six issue mini, Young Avengers.

And, from AP Entertainment (don't miss this one) we get "Prince of Heroes".  I have no idea what the story is about, but the art looks exciting:

So you've seen what is to come in January.  Plan accordingly.
