Daredevil #113 Reviewed! My Money is Where My Mouth Is!

DD113 Recently Christine and I have been playfully going back and forth regarding the status of Daredevil's main title.

While we have been chiding each other regarding disagreeing I had yet to put my foot in to the ring.

Same as always, I was throwing out words with no back up.  I was the guy standing behind his two muscular buddies, yelling at their adversary, knowing he was well protected.

(Bart can attest to how clever I am with this technique from our childhood.)

So wanting to right this wrong, I grabbed the most recent issue of Daredevil (#113, Part 3 of the Lady Bullseye storyline) and sat down for a second read through.

The following is my reasons for why this issues does not score more than a 5.5 in my opinion.

First let me hit you with some numbers:

  1. There are 22 pages in the book.
  2. Only 8 pages (36%) do we see Daredevil in his tights.
  3. Only 5 pages (23%) do we see any DD action.

Now let me break it down for you even further:

  1. There are 120 panels in the book.
  2. Only 29 panels (24%) do we see DD in his tights.
  3. Only 16 panels (13%) do we see any DD action.

The action that we do see, DD get's his ass handed to him and has to have this old fuddy duddy come and rescue him at the end.  The action we do see consists of him getting kicked, hit, blocked and thoroughly trounced with no consequences.  I am well aware that a character needs to stagger a bit, especially DD, but my word, since when did he became such a pansy?

And this issue has more action in it than the last several issues.  I think #110 showed DD in costume for one page.  Yikes!  (Note: I might be wrong with issue number, but I remember getting done reading a recent issue and flipping back through it to see if DD was even in it.)

What Brubaker does well is set up.  I agree with that.  And he keeps layering on setup, with new characters, new situations, new plot. But I am done with set up.  This is Part 3 for crying out loud.  If we're going to accept this Lady B. as a worthy adversary, she needs to go toe to toe with DD for half an issue.  Not 13% of an issue.  Half an issue!

This is my biggest gripe about the Brubaker run.  DD sees very little action.  And by action I don't mean "action".  Although, it seems like he goes from woman to woman and gets more horizontal action than any  good old fighting action.  So I guess he is lucky in that regard.

So, all you DD lovers, and you dear Christine, this is my beef.  Too much setup, too little excitement.  Now, in all honesty, I would much rather have what we had in #113, than just mindless jumping around and fighting, a la the early 90's.  But you know what I'm saying....

Will this change next issue?  I can only hope.

Wow, I've never gotten my own Technorati tag before! LOL Will I be famous now?

See, now I know why we will never agree. Your reasons for not liking Bru is perhaps my primary reason for liking him. Half an issue of fighting? That better be one helluva fight or I'd consider it a wasted one half of an issue. I know it's a superhero book, and superhero books have action in them. They should. What I always thought was so great about DD is that he's more than just your average superhero. His civilian identity is as interesting as his costumed alter ego, or even more so in many cases.

I couldn't care less how many panels we see of him in costume. I care about the story being good. That could mean a whole issue with nothing but costume or an issue of Matt hanging out at the court house. I think the current balance is perfect. I can understand why some people feel that he's a fairly weak character (physically) under Brubaker, and that is absolutely a valid complaint. I, however, prefer this to him taking out a whole army of Yakuzas. Given his powerset, it's just not plausible to me. I do think Bru needs to be careful not to continue in this direction with the character action-wise, but I prefer this situation to its opposite.

As I suspected, this DOES come down to a matter of taste. Good action that drives the story forward? By all means. Action scenes that take up page after page and eats up actual story progression and forces character development to take a back seat? No, thank you. :)

Weren't you already famous? That's the impression I was under.

I think we agree more than we will let on. I agree with everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) said here.

But, that is all fine and dandy for the first two issues of a multi-part story. But this is part 3. I want some ass kicking for a bit! Part 3! Give me back story. But give me costumes. And ass kicking. Part 3!

LOL

I pick up the title because it is "Daredevil". Not because it is called "Matt Murdock, Attorney at Law". (Although I would buy that too...I would just have different expectations.)

Did you pick up the DD/Captain America one shot? Pretty cool I thought.

I have to ask you this though. What is your favorite DD run ever?

It could be a male vs. female thing going on here too. So we agree to disagree in an agreeing way. What a way to end a day. DD love all around?

Talk soon Christine! Remember us little people when your popularity blows up!

LOL Well, I'm not that famous. Yet. We'll see what happens after I post a video of myself making chocolate billy clubs this weekend. And I'm not even kidding about that. It's a Christmas goodies special, okay? ;)

I did read the DD/Cap one-shot and I thought it was pretty good. I have no problem with an entire issue of only in-costume stuff. I just want more than that from the main book. But you're right, I do think this might be a male/female thing to a certain extent. I also get the feeling that DD has an unusually high percentage of female fans.

Really? You think old horn head gets more lady readers than other supers? Very interesting....

As for those billy clubs. We want to see the video and pictures of these club confections!

And please send some my way. My address is.......

Why, yes, I think DD has a lot of female readers. I happen to know several myself, Christine being the most famous one, I'm sure. She's the MarthaFreakinStuart of DD fandom. I demand my share of the chocolate billy clubs, young lady!

I wouldn't trade most of the arcs in the first couple of decades of DD for the relatively great stuff we've been treated to in the last decade. (Of course, there are exceptions. Cough*GuardianDevil*Cough)

Give me some good character introspection over asskicking in tights any day of the week. Well, maybe not on Saturday nights...

Oops. That's MarthaFreakinStewart. Yeah, that's what I meant.

Hey there, Jon.

While I'm slightly more leaning on your side when it comes to judge Brubaker's work on the crimson avenger, I must say that maybe you've not picked the best example of "why Brubaker is not so good with DD" with DD 113.

I don't think the greatness of a DD issue can be told by the percentage of "DD in tights", or even "DD in action" in it.
For example, I'm a sucker for DD action (as the ladies here know well), but I could've frankly done without the action involving "DD beating up street thugs in an alley or a bar" Bru has fed us repeatedly in the recent past.

Bru even lampshades that, in this issue, when he's about to face the ninjas and said that he "hasn't faced foes with real training for some time".

I think that Bru has sort of realized this mistake of having DD look and act like a third rater (both skills-wise and strategically-wise), but that may just be wishful thinking on my side.
About his fight with Lady Bullseye and her flank, you said he got his ass handed to him, but I don't think that's the case.

Sure, Lady Bullseye lands more hits, but Matt is pretty clear when he says that she doesn't hit as hard as Bullseye or Kingpin (indirectly meaning that he can take those). He also explicitly says he believes he can take her.

When the ninjas attack, Matt isn't really in that disadvantaged position, if you think about it (come on, he eats hand ninjas for breakfast) to say that Izo has actually saved him.
I'd be more inclined to say that Izo has just intervened and robbed him of all the fun ;).

I would never rate a DD issue by the number of pannels in which Dd is in costume/action...

... because I rate DD issues by the name of Foggy pannels ;p
