Devil WaterNo other way would I have heard of this publisher.  But since they are giving their stuff away for free people take interest.  Hmmm.  Seems like I said this before.  Good for them.  Good for us.

Amazing Spider-Man #546 (Brand New Day Part One) Reviewed

First things first.  You need to know what came out of One More Day (or Amazing Spidey #545).  Even if you read it you should be checking this image out and reading it because not everything was explained this clearly in the book itself.  So here it is...click the pic to make it bigger:

spideyrecap

First of all notice that basically everything Straczynski wrote in to the Spider-Man mythos (everything I hated about the title over the last 5 years) has been removed.  Poof!  Gone!  No Green Goblin/Gwen Stacy babies.  No organic web shooters.  No any of that crap that took place during his run.

So Brand New Day had me at that little revelation.

Also, Brand New Day completely reverses Civil War's unveiling of Peter Parker to the country as Spider-Man.  Which is very anti-climatic.  That was supposed to be the shocker of a lifetime and it is now written out.  Poof!  Gone!

So knowing some of this and knowing they are trying to take Spidey to a street level book again, and knowing that a new writer would be on board got me once again ordering these Spidey titles.

amazing546 Okay...now on to #546, what comes after One More Day.

If you review this issue as a stand alone title it works very well.  There's a lot of dialogue with other characters, lots of old favorite characters, Peter finding himself in awkward situations, Aunt May as her old baggy self, a pretty cool new villain and some great art by Steve McNiven.

It's refreshing to have Peter being back in these situations instead of having 24 pages of him swinging around the city with dialogue boxes as he thinks to himself.  Plus, this book took a while to read, there was a lot going on.  Refreshing.

If you review this issue as the mind sweep that is One More Day, you may not be as happy.

Certainly they have thrown everything out and we have Peter back to his core.  It takes several pages to get used to the fact that there is no MJ in his life...but that is just an emotional fan boy reaction that we all need to get over.

Peter finally gives it to old Jonah when he goes to collect his paycheck and finds that the Bugle is about to be bought out from under Jonah.  And I found myself rooting for Peter again, which hasn't happened in a long time.

So while I know this One More Day trip has pissed off a lot of people, I for one am glad to see where it takes us.  If this issue is a promise of things to come I will stay on board.

But...and this is a big but...there is a back up story of a new female hero called Jackpot (the back up story is drawn by Greg Land so the character looks like every other chick he draws, so take your pick, Sue Storm, Sojourn...they all look like Jackpot), who happens to have red hair, a hot body and mentions she made money as a model.  And she uses the word "tiger".

"Face it tiger...you just hit the JACKPOT."

Get it?

Oh man....just when I was getting excited.

Iron Man cartoon....holy crap!

Now this is a cartoon!  Check out these two videos.  Amazing.  Makes me want to get up on Saturday mornings again.

Apparently this cartoon will feature Iron Man with a revolving cast of other Marvel heroes.  Kinda like a Marvel Two in One from back in the day.  But animated.  And with IM instead of the Thing.

Hulk #1 Reviewed!

hulk1 So I have to be honest.  I wasn't looking forward to Hulk #1 by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness.  World War Hulk blew.  Hulk red...blah.  Jeph Loeb's start on Ultimates 3 was atrocious.  So the only thing this relaunch had going for me was McGuinness working on a character in which he seemed to have been born to draw.

I didn't like this first issue.

First of all, it's one of those comics which is a 2 minute read.  The kind a comic you finish before you're done taking a crap, which is just an awful situation because then you have to decide whether you break open another comic and stay on the crapper until your done with comic #2 or if just finish your business without reading material, which in my book is considered a sin.

So it had that going against it.

Second, red hulk wasn't in it at all.  We just see that the green Hulk kicked some Abomination ass in Russia somewhere, but we don't get to actually participate in the fight except for 11 panels of flashbacks, which are tight and not that action oriented.  And then we find that the Hulk pulls out a gun and blows Blonsky away.  Yawn.

We have the usual suspects; Doc Samson, Hulk Girl (She Hulk) and General Ross, so it's nice to get the core Hulk characters back in the book.

And for some reason, since they are in Russia apparently, the Winter Guard makes an appearance for 8 of the pages.  Eight pages!  Now, you may not know who the Winter Guard is, and if so I commend you.  They are Ursa Major, Red Guardian, Crimson Dynamo, and Darkstar.  A fight ensues for some of the 8 pages and nothing memorable stands out except for the fact that She Hulk is written really poorly as she makes all these Pooh Bear quips while she fights Ursa Major, who is a big bear.  Plus, these four super human beings basically sneak up on Iron Man and S.H.I.E.L.D commander Hill, Ross, Samson, and She Hulk.  Um...wouldn't they have a secure perimeter?  It would make sense with all the tech that Iron Man has in his gear.

But the issue reads like a #0 preview book.  Nothing grabs me by my Hulklings.

'Tis a shame.

Oh, and after all that garbage about Banner being dead after World War Hulk...yeah, he's alive and well.  Not quite the cliffhanger I was hoping for.

The art was cool though...even though all he was really given was a bunch of pages full of talking.

My recommendation....stay away. This book was $3, use that save a little more and go grab the Essential Hulk for some fun reads with the same characters.

Minus Pooh Bear.
