First things first. You need to know what came out of One More Day (or Amazing Spidey #545). Even if you read it you should be checking this image out and reading it because not everything was explained this clearly in the book itself. So here it is...click the pic to make it bigger:
First of all notice that basically everything Straczynski wrote in to the Spider-Man mythos (everything I hated about the title over the last 5 years) has been removed. Poof! Gone! No Green Goblin/Gwen Stacy babies. No organic web shooters. No any of that crap that took place during his run.
So Brand New Day had me at that little revelation.
Also, Brand New Day completely reverses Civil War's unveiling of Peter Parker to the country as Spider-Man. Which is very anti-climatic. That was supposed to be the shocker of a lifetime and it is now written out. Poof! Gone!
So knowing some of this and knowing they are trying to take Spidey to a street level book again, and knowing that a new writer would be on board got me once again ordering these Spidey titles.
Okay...now on to #546, what comes after One More Day.
If you review this issue as a stand alone title it works very well. There's a lot of dialogue with other characters, lots of old favorite characters, Peter finding himself in awkward situations, Aunt May as her old baggy self, a pretty cool new villain and some great art by Steve McNiven.
It's refreshing to have Peter being back in these situations instead of having 24 pages of him swinging around the city with dialogue boxes as he thinks to himself. Plus, this book took a while to read, there was a lot going on. Refreshing.
If you review this issue as the mind sweep that is One More Day, you may not be as happy.
Certainly they have thrown everything out and we have Peter back to his core. It takes several pages to get used to the fact that there is no MJ in his life...but that is just an emotional fan boy reaction that we all need to get over.
Peter finally gives it to old Jonah when he goes to collect his paycheck and finds that the Bugle is about to be bought out from under Jonah. And I found myself rooting for Peter again, which hasn't happened in a long time.
So while I know this One More Day trip has pissed off a lot of people, I for one am glad to see where it takes us. If this issue is a promise of things to come I will stay on board.
But...and this is a big but...there is a back up story of a new female hero called Jackpot (the back up story is drawn by Greg Land so the character looks like every other chick he draws, so take your pick, Sue Storm, Sojourn...they all look like Jackpot), who happens to have red hair, a hot body and mentions she made money as a model. And she uses the word "tiger".
"Face it tiger...you just hit the JACKPOT."
Get it?
Oh man....just when I was getting excited.
